January Fashion: Taking Inventory to Prevent the "Splurge"

Most women, like myself, love to shop. However, we are all about new year's resolutions here and one of mine is to spend less money. How can I do that and shop?! Well, I do have a solution, and it is called "taking inventory." I'm going to show you what that looks like now by examining my own wardrobe.

What do I have? What staples do I need? Take 2 hrs, more or less, depending on your wardrobe to look at everything and take notes.

  Jewelry
This is definitely a weakness of mine. Particularly when it comes to Betsey Johnson jewelry. Looking at my jewelry box, this is not a "need" but I would love more bangles and long necklaces. I have too many earrings, so no matter how much I love those tiny bumble bees studs, I need to pass on them in favor of something I have less of.
Bags
I need a clutch. I probably have like 6 bags and I don't really change my bags everyday so it's not a necessity by any means. They are a good investment when you can swing it because bags don't really go through trends as often. But a good clutch is all I need to round out my perfect collection.

Shoes
Too many boots. Not enough flats or flip-flops, i.e. don't buy any more winter shoes! However, if you are lacking in winter shoes, now is the perfect time to buy sale boots! DSW has some great deals! I actually went about a week ago and snagged some sale sandals in their clearance section in preparation for spring '13!  A good nude, black, or even red as a neutral color is a good staple buy for your collection.
Clothing
If you went an entire season without wearing an item, it's time to toss it.  I generally donate things I haven't touched in 12-18 months.  I could stand to add some more trendy tops to my wardrobe, but other than that, I mainly just want to lose 10lbs so that I can be excited about my clothes again! When it comes time for shopping for apparel, I will look for trendy tops on sale, but forget everything else because I already have plenty of it. Big time way to save $. Make sure you have your staples and you should be set. Any other purchase should be considered a luxury.

So that's it. Focus on these things and you will be less tempted to go splurging all over town for items that you do not need. You may be so surprised at your wardrobe's strengths and weaknesses and you won't be so tempted to aimlessly shop, which in turn results in a lot of unnecessary purchases. Also, it's a better way to use those Christmas gift cards! Think of your wardrobe as your Presidential cabinet, only you're focused on flats and clutches while Obama is focused on the national treasury. Fill only the needs that need to be met.
