October: Events at a Glance

If you call me in October, chances are you're gonna have to leave a message, cause I'm gonna be busy. And hey - you should be, too! Let's sync our calendars, shall we?

A of all: CONCERTS

Spotlight on: Passion Pit - Memphis (Oct 27 @ Mingelwood Hall) and Oxford (Oct 26 @ The Lyric)
Michael Angelakos started this band himself from a laptop writing songs for his then gfriend. Now look at adorable Michael go. They are playing a small show you might have heard of called Saturday Night Live on October 13th. If he stays well  enough (he suffers from a pretty severe bipolar disorder and has already had to postpone several shows on this tour), this could become one of my most favorite nights of the year. They are a super fun electropop band with some serious themeage, but lots of lights, bells, and pretty, pretty sounds. Enjoy this fun number called "Carried Away" from their new album. I just got so excited about this show and these songs that Cassie had to tell me to shut up. That like never happens. Check back with their page for the latest.

Other Must See Concerts in Memphis:
Avett Brothers - Oct 12 @ Mud Island
Star and Micey - Oct 18 @ Hi-Tone
Mute Math w/ Civil Twilight - Oct 19 @ Mingelwood
Band of Horses - October 22 @ Mingelwood
Drive By Truckers - Oct 19 @ New Daisy
Grace Potter & the Nocturnals - Oct 24 @ New Daisy

For a road trip to see my personal favorite band:
Stars - Oct 5 @Plush in St. Louis
Stars - Oct 11 @Revolution Music Room in Little Rock

So that's like a month's worth of concerts. But what about festivals, plays, and other local activities? Yeah, Memphis has got it covered. As usual. Have you even seen the latest article about the Memphis scene from Forbes? If not: check it out here.

B of all: FESTIVALS

Spotlight on: Cooper Young BeerFest - (Saturday, Oct 13 from 1:00 - 5:00)
It's the 3rd annual and I couldn't be more geeked about any other event this month! I'm a beer girl, y'all, and I've been the past 2 years and had a damn good time learning about beer, meeting some cool distributors & some even cooler midtowners, and getting a good afternoon buzz.  Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the event.  That price includes a sweet mug and unlimited beer tasting! Oh, and what's super awesome? Designated drivers will be allowed into the festival for free but will not receive a mug.  38104+safe day-drinking-- I'll take it!  Food available for purchase from vendors, bring cash.  Check out their website for more info. See ya there- CT

Other Must Do Festivals in October:
Pink Palace Crafts Fair - Oct 12-14 @Audubon Park
Agricenter Fall Harvest Festival - Oct 20 @ Agricenter
River Arts Festival - Oct 27-28 @S. Main

C of all: THEATRE

Spotlight on: Catch Me if You Can Oct 16-21 @The Orpheum
The movie was great, the Broadway musical was "catchy" enough to score itself 4 Tony noms, but neither of those reasons are why we here at 6&1/2 things are so psyched to see this musical tour come to town. Our talented friend Ben Laxton has recently joined the national tour as Agent Dollar and understudy to lead character, Frank Abagnale, Jr. and will be returning to Memphis for this tour stop! If you happened to catch any of the 2011-2012 season at Playhouse on the Square, you might remember Ben making you laugh as Princeton in Avenue Q (which grabbed him an Ostrander for Lead Actor in a Musical) or weep uncontrollably as Gabe in Next to Normal. He's genuinely one of the most talented performers we've seen on the Playhouse stage and now he's making his presence known all over the country. Way to go, Ben! Go support his show, y'all. Check out the rest of the show details here

Other Must See Theatre in October:
The Hot L Baltimore - Sept 28 - Oct 14 @Playhouse on the Square
Zombies from the Beyond - Oct 5 - 28 @ The Circuit Playhouse
Talley's Folly - Sept 21 - Oct 7 @Theatre Memphis' Next Stage
Dangerous Liaisons - Oct 12 - 28 @ Theatre Memphis's Lohrey Stage

D of All: FUN STUFF!!

Spotlight On: Osaka Memphis location opening this month!!! I have been waiting on this all year!!!

Six and a half guesses as to what kind of food they serve?
Im thinking...
1. Pizza
2. Hot Dogs with Mustard and Relish
3. Chinese fried rice
4. Enchiladas
5. Cincinnati style chili
6. Candy Store
6.5. It's really just a Cracker Barrel in disguise.

Seriously, we get it. You're Japanese. Maybe the largest sign I have ever seen. It couldn't be more obvious if it had a mile high pagoda standing atop with Hello Kitty toys and Japanese Animé reading material in the gift shop.

Other Fun Stuff to Experience in October:
The Goonies: showing Oct 12 @The Orpheum
Local Gastropub on the Square: opening in October @Overton Square
Zoo Boo: various dates in October @ The Memphis Zoo

Geez. I feel overwhelmed just writing all of that. I thought May was bad, but October just might kill me. At the very least, it might ensure that my house stays clean because I will never be there. Hey, that could be a good thing. There's also plenty to do to entertain the kiddos, but that would be a different demographic altogether. If you want to see my list on kid-friendly activities, hit me up here.
